Jazz Under the Gantries: Kelvyn Bell

Jazz Foundation of America and Gantry Plaza State Park present a new jazz summer music series: Jazz Under the Gantries. On August 17, Jazz Under the Gantries presents Kelvyn Bell. Jazz Funk guitarist and vocalist, Bell studied guitar under Oliver Lake and, through Lake, became a member of the Black Artists Group, meeting musicians such as Hamiett Bluiett, Lester Bowie, and Joseph Bowie. He became a member of Defunkt, Joseph Bowie's ensemble, from 1980 to 1988, concomitantly leading his own band, Kelvynator (featuring Eric Person). He's also worked with Steve Coleman, Michele Rosewoman, Jean-Paul Bourelly, Bob Stewart, Elliott Sharp, David Fiuczynski, Marc Ribot and Cassandra Wilson.
