The East River isn't actually a river at all — it's a tidal strait, pulled in and out twice a day by the moon, 238,855 miles away. That same lunar pull has shaped New York's waterfront for millennia, tugging tides in and out of this exact spot long before anyone was here to notice.

Join us for a free, adult-oriented workshop open to all experience levels. We'll kick things off with a visually engaging slideshow on the science and folklore of the moon and tides — from why we get two high tides a day, to the Man in the Moon, moon-made-of-cheese legends, and the real origin of the word "lunatic."

Next, unwind with a relaxing hands-on art project: you'll paint and cut out your own scene inside a small shadow box, building a layered, three-dimensional moon-and-water world with real depth. Moon phases, ocean waves, werewolves, rabbits, cheese wheels, or something entirely your own. Bring your imagination and see where it takes you.

This class is led by Monica Schroeder, a professional scientific illustrator and watercolorist.

All materials will be provided, but you're welcome to bring your own favorite supplies if you prefer.
