Scoping Out Trees & Mushrooms with HPPC

Scoping Out Trees & Mushrooms with HPPC

We are very excited to be partnering with the NYC Mushroom Network to host a mushroom and tree fall guided walk! We will be joined by arborists and mycologists as our walk leaders.

This is a special, family friendly, mycological walk with a slight bent towards urban arboriculture and agriculture. It's the perfect time to enjoy the end of the mushroom fruiting season, as well as kick-off winter tree pruning season, the ideal time to harvest wood for mushroom log cultivation!

We have 5 amazing walk leaders confirmed - Andrew Cannon, rust fungi enthusiast, and Wilton Rao, lichen expert, of the New York Mycological Society. We also have Parks experts - Marilyn Griffin of Gracie Mansion and Schuyler Borden of Brooklyn Forestry. As well as, Daniel Wendlek alongside arborists and tree experts from Arborpolitan.

We will meet at the Oval in Hunter's Point South Park (at the intersection of Borden Ave. and Center Blvd.) at 1 PM sharp. Together we will survey Hunters Point Park and Gantry Plaza State Park, identify the diversity of soils, trees, plants, fungi and lichen, and learn about the local ecology.

The walk will culminate at the Queens Landing Boathouse and Environmental Center at 2 PM, where we will discuss our observations and look at collected specimens under the macro- and microscopes!

The walk and microscopy sessions are open to all ages and experience levels.

*ISA continuing education credits are pending approval.

Schedule

1 - 2 PM Hunters Point South Park & Gantry Plaza State Park Foray

2 - 3 PM Queens Landing Boathouse & Environmental Center Microscopy session

Morning Meditation on the Waterfront
Sep
27

Morning Meditation on the Waterfront

Join us for Morning Meditation on the Waterfront hosted by Hunter’s Point Parks Conservancy in partnership with Meditation in Queens.

Our root mind is naturally light, boundless and deeply peaceful. We imagine our mind is like the vast, clear blue sky and the mental busyness and painful emotions we experience are like clouds. Through training our mind, we allow these clouds to dissolve, revealing the boundless potential within. In just 30 minutes of meditation, we can shape the flow of our entire day. By connecting to our clear sky-link mind and intentionally cultivating inner peace, we can access the best of ourselves and learn to live from this place. While the meditations we offer are Buddhist, they appeal to anyone seeking to cultivate a deeper state of inner peace and authentic happiness. After the guided meditation, we will have 15 minutes for Q&A and community time.

Meditation Teacher: Henry Green

Location: Hunter’s Point South Park (map). Entrance to Luminescence peninsula is located at Center Blvd between 54th and 55th Avenues.

No previous experience is necessary.

Please bring a blanket or mat for sitting meditation.

Everyone Welcome.
