Oyster Watercolor Class

Oysters in New York Harbor once grew to the size of dinner plates, and piles of discarded oyster shells from local diners reportedly reached heights of 20 feet! However, decades of pollution and overharvesting led to the decline of these remarkable shellfish.

Today, thanks to community-driven restoration efforts, New Yorkers are making great strides to bring oysters back to our harbor.

Join us for a free, adult-oriented workshop open to all experience levels. We’ll kick things off with a visually engaging slideshow about these fascinating creatures and their deep connection to the history of New York City’s waterways.

Next, unwind with a relaxing watercolor session, where you’ll learn foundational watercolor techniques and explore simple color theory. You’ll create your own oyster painting with a vibrant, contrasting background, arranged as a triptych.

This class is led by Monica Schroeder, a professional scientific illustrator and watercolorist.

All materials will be provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own favorite supplies if you prefer.

This class will be held at the Queens Landing Boathouse & Environmental Center.
